Hypnotherapy Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses guided relaxation and focused attention to help individuals achieve a state of heightened suggestibility, allowing them to explore, address and reprogram various issues, habits, or behaviors that are from their subconscious minds.
How does hypnotherapy work?
Hypnotherapy works by guiding individuals into a deep relaxed state, where the subconscious mind becomes open and receptive to suggestions and positive changes.
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Yes, hypnotherapy is safe when performed by a trained and qualified hypnotherapist.
What happens during a typical hypnotherapy session?
First, you will discuss the issues you are experiencing and the positive changes you would like to make, followed by deep relaxation techniques and/or guided imagery to induce the hypnotic state (a state of deep relaxation). The hypnotherapist then provides positive suggestions and ideas to address your specific goals.
How long does a hypnotherapy session usually last?
Sessions typically last 50-55 minutes, although the duration can vary depending on the therapist and the issue being addressed. If you would like EFT as well as hypnotherapy, the session will take approximately 25-30 minutes longer.
Can anyone be hypnotized?
Everyone can be hypnotized. Hypnosis is merely the last conscious waking state before unconscious sleep. However, the level of suggestibility can vary from person to person.
What qualifications should I look for in a hypnotherapist?
Look for a hypnotherapist who has graduated from an extensive program, has certification, and has experience treating your specific issue.
Are the effects of hypnotherapy permanent?
Like working out in a gym, the effectiveness of hypnotherapy can vary, but when done regularly, it can lead to lasting changes in behavior and thought patterns.
Can hypnotherapy help with weight loss or smoking cessation?
Yes, hypnotherapy has been used successfully to assist with weight loss and smoking cessation by addressing underlying habits and motivations.
Can a hypnotherapist make me cluck a chicken, or rob a bank if I don’t want to, or make me do other things I don’t want to do?
Absolutely not. You remain in complete control, in fact some feel like they have more control in the deep relaxed state of hypnosis. The only way you would want to rob a bank after hypnosis is if you were already a bank robber and enjoyed doing so.
How do I prepare for a hypnotherapy session?
Your therapist will provide specific instructions, but generally, it's helpful to come with a clear goal or issue you'd like to address.
Can I use self-hypnosis techniques at home?
Yes, self-hypnosis techniques can be learned and practiced at home to reinforce therapeutic goals. Each session can be recorded for use at home.
What's the difference between hypnotherapy and traditional therapy?
Hypnotherapy focuses on the subconscious mind (88-90% of the mind), while traditional therapy typically involves the conscious mind (10-12% of the mind) using cognitive therapy, discussion and exploration of thoughts and feelings.
What should I do if I have concerns or doubts about hypnotherapy?
Discuss your concerns with your hypnotherapist before and during sessions to ensure you are comfortable with the process.
Are sessions on zoom as effective as sessions in person?
Zoom sessions and in person sessions are equally effective.
How do I prepare for a zoom session
Make sure your WiFi is working properly. Find a comfortable, well lit area to have the session, where you can recline during the hypnosis, and make sure your hypnotherapist has a view of your body from the knees up. If the zoom gets interrupted for any reason, have a telephone or cell phone handy so your hypnotherapist can call you to complete the session on the phone.
